RSV: When It's More Than A Cold
Respiratory Syncytial Virus. That’s RSV’s whole name. Some people may be confused on what this virus is and why is this virus even important to know about. SIVAD PPE and the rest of the world have taken into account how important it is to be knowledgeable about disease, how it spreads and what we can do to prevent from getting sick.
What Is This RSV?
RSV causes mild cold like symptoms in adults, but can be serious for infants, children, and the elderly. RSV is not new. It's not uncharted territory like COVID-19 was. That’s how we know that “RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia (infection of the lungs) in children younger than 1 year of age in the United States” (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). What is different is that pediatric units all over the country are becoming overwhelmed due to the onslaught of cases in children arriving way earlier in the year than usual.
Why is this so important?
Keeping up with healthy practices is extremely important to keep the wheels turning. When we get sick we can’t go to work. Children can’t get to school. Things stop for us and consequently everything slows down for all the people and things around us that need us. The world is a team and we’re all important members on that team.
Who Is Affected By RSV?
We all are, but children and elderly especially. Infants who develop breathing problems have to rely on breathing medications their entire lives. Carrying around large breathing machines or having to find ways to buy inhalers. RSV is also responsible for 1 in 50 deaths in children age 5 and under. RSV may seem simple for adults of a certain age group, but can be fatal to our elderly.
What Can We Do To Prevent The Spread Of RSV?
What we’ve learned is tried and true. Wearing our PPE masks when sick and going out to pick something up. Not going around our loved ones when sick. Keeping kids home from school or staying home from work as long as we can to heal our bodies. Drinking plenty of fluids and dressing appropriately during the cold seasons to keep our bodies in fighting shape. Cleaning our environments as often and as much as we can to kill or viruses and germs. The last point, this is where SIVAD PPE can help organizations prevent the spread of RSV.
